AMP

Fewer than 25 per cent of those with hearing impairment in the U. S. wear hearing aids. Two major reasons are price and vanity. Small, inconspicuous hearing aids with advanced electronics can cost up to $5000 each or even more. AAC is pleased to announce the AMP,  from Starkey Labs. The AMP is a Personal Sound Amplifying Product (PSAP) that is designed for those not yet ready for hearing aids. It is invisible and affordable ($1500/pair). They are designed specifically for those experiencing difficulty only in certain situations, just needing to boost the volume and not for those with moderate-to-severe hearing loss. 

The AMP is completely digital with features previously not seen in this price category, including: four-channel signal processing; feedback cancellation; and a magnetic wand that allows patients to turn AMP on and off as well as adjust volume. Elastomeric sleeves designed to promote airflow and reduce occlusion are available in a variety of sizes to fit a range of ear anatomies. The AMP uses a size 10 battery. 

The AMP is not a hearing aid even though it has many similarities to traditional hearing devices.  They have been likened to "reading glasses for the ears". A more accurate description might be "contact lenses for the ears", as they fit completely into the recesses of the ear canal with no external tubes, wires, etc., and are invisible when worn. They are light-weight and comfortable to wear.  They enhance hearing capability durinng recreational activities such as hunting (listening for prey), bird watching, listening to lectures with distant speakers, and listening to soft sounds that are ordinarily difficult to hear like distant conversations or stage productions.  They enable caregivers to hear  toddlers from many yards away.

The AMP is designed to enhance hearing in certain settings only. Specifically, they are for those who have minimal or no difficulty in ordinary situations. It is an electronic marvel. It is sure to please those simply needing a boost in volume for a more relaxed and enjoyable listening experience.
